Other side done. Sweet jesus I am lucky I am not dead.

Kinja'd!!!

If you can’t tell, that is a puddle of brake fluid on the... outside of the wheel cylinder. I don’t think it’s supposed to be like that.

Kinja'd!!!

given how I was compressing everything to get it apart, I am pretty sure that is what a leaky line is supposed to look like. No wonder this thing stopped like shit.

Kinja'd!!!

Modification I had to do to the new cylinder to get it to fit. From an AC delco part on a GM car. wowie.

Kinja'd!!!

Also I think the jackass who did these brakes last put the bottom spring on wrong. I copied it and it interferes with the auto adjuster. which means I probably need to take this side apart again at some point.

To do today: replace rear lines, bench bleed master cylinder, hook everything back up. Gather parts for trip to machine shop tomorrow.

I’m fine keeping drums on my truck, but then it’s a pickup, not a car.

On a related note, however, I’m having the brakes thoroughly inspected by my local shop this week when they put new tires on. New master cylinder is likely the next step, but I want to know what they think of the wheel cylinders, etc. before doing that.

As much as I’d love to just say, “do it all” it’s gotta be one thing at a time.

Interferes how...? The spring is supposed to contact the adjuster.

It is? ok, I didn’t know. It touches up top and when I need to adjust it it hits off the star so I have to lift it up with a screwdriver. I couldn’t think of a reason why so I assumed it was fucked up.

There should be a straight part of the spring resting against the star teeth. The spring moves any that’s how it automatically adjusts. Look up some diagrams and pictures, because that will make it way easier to understand and make sure yours is correct.

I figured it was the arm that rotated the star teeth. it has a piece specifically for that.

Oh does it? There are a few different styles. That one isn’t common, at least not in my experience.
